In February, after a split-cage intro, I introduced two 2 month old brothers to my older lone male. Now those boys are about 7 months old & almost a year. I've had to separate them and reintroduce them a number of times now due to the oldest guy chasing one of the younger siblings. The last time, they appeared to ball up but no one was bitten; it just seemed like intense sniffing. Before that, there was intense chasing behavior, causing the younger male to pop up, hit the glass, etc. There was also typical "sizing up" behavior going on. Everything is fine with the other 7 month old boy; he's extremely submissive.
So they're in the split-cage right now & I'm deciding whether or not I should reintroduce them or permanently separate. On a regular basis, they're very loving with each other.
Oh, also.. I have linked some of the behavior to adding things to their tank. But... adding a second wheel actually seemed to help one of the last times. And.. this last time that I separated them, it happened after they had been enjoying playtime outside of their aquarium. I haven't always been able to find a link to something, though, and I do my best to follow all the gerbil rules(like adding used bedding when I clean their tank).
Advice?

If it is causing you stress to always be checking them and watching out for chasing, etc, then imagine how stressful it could be for them actually living in that tank and having to constantly reassess each other and defend dominance...
I have parted clans after this type of behaviour, to make it easier for everyone. And most of my single gerbs ended up splitting to a new friend anyway, so hopefully everyone's happy now anyway.

I've worried that permanently separating them would be too stressful as they(98% of the time) really seem to love each other. This last time was particularly crazy, though, and I think you're right: time to give up. I'll be looking for a baby male or two for him. I hope I can find one; I don't feel comfortable placing him with another adult due to his dominant nature.

Maybe just find him a single tank mate this time, then they have to love each other as there is no-one else there to pick up the slack...

I thought the same right after I posted. Two more could just be the same situation all over again..
