I'm trying to learn more about colours & I'm not sure what this one is - is it lilac? Or saphire? Looking at pics on the internet & there doesn't seem to be much difference between the 2 colours. confused.com

There isn't much difference overall as they merge into each other depending on what other genes they have hidden (like the e gene) as well as if they are spotted.
Yours is quite dark and has no spotting so I would suggest Lilac first and possibly a dark Sapphire second without knowing their parents.
If you know the parents, that can sometimes help - but not always! If you have a picture from the side too that can sometimes show a better colour than just head on...

It's not actually my gerbil - just a pic I found online. It's a beautiful colour tho. I guess my learning is going to be limited if I just look at pics online although I think I'm starting to get a general gist...

Ah ok. No worries. That is how I learned most of the colours and genetics - buy looking online and then making notes on the more tricky ones... I still have trouble with all the 'greys' (LCP Grey Agouti/LCP Agouti/CP Nutmeg/Light Silver Nutmeg/CP Polar Fox/Light Polar Fox etc). I need to check various charts for toenail colour and tail pattern to rule some out. It's not easy sometimes.
Lilacs and Sapphires and then Sapphires and Doves tend to merge together in the same way that Argente Golden, Creams and Fawns merge together sometimes - especially with Spotting - so unless you know the parents or you breed from them you might never actually know. I have Sapphires and Spotted Sapphires from Light CP parents - but one of them could be a dark Dove/dark Spotted Dove I just wouldn't know.
