I woke up this morning and discovered a large lump on my gerbil's scent gland...I'm assuming it's a tumor. My mom and I are looking into taking him to the vet as soon as possible. He isn't lethargic and has been drinking plenty of water. He's eating most of his food and carrying on as if nothing is wrong with him...he was even tunneling around in his new bedding a few minutes ago. I haven't heard him squeaking and I caught him grooming his stomach the other day, but I didn't even consider that something could be wrong with him. I have no idea how long the tumor has been there (which I feel TERRIBLE about because I should have been checking him frequently). Is there anything I can do to help him from home until we can make an appointment with the vet?
I don't know his exact birthdate, but I got him almost three years ago. He's my first gerbil and I've never had to go through this before...

Nothing you can do really apart from distracting him from chewing his tummy with tasty treats and perhaps some of his favourite things to chew? Some people suggest manuka honey for sore skin - but I'm not sure if that would help or hinder in this case - it might make it harder for the vet to see the problem?
The vet will also be able to confirm if it's a tumour and perhaps offer some pain killers if it is annoying him. It depends how big it actually is as well...
Let us know what they say?

Thank you so much. I'll be sure to let you know what the vet says. He's been sleeping all day and he hasn't been messing with it. I'll be sure to keep a close eye on him.

Mine didn't annoy my gerbil until it go too big and then it ulcerated and start to itch - and that's the first time I noticed it myself.
If it gets 'too' big though, they can't operate even if you wanted to, so always good to get it checked early on, even if you aren't planning on treating it - at least you know your options and how to try and delay worsening effects.

I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Thanks!
