Hi I have recently noticed my little girl Willow has fur loss on the base of her tail. She is 2 and a half and lost her sister nearly 2 weeks ago. I've had a look and can't see any mites. Is this a case of just over grooming now she is on her own or is she stressed after loosing her sister or is it something more serious. I am planning on getting her 2 pups to join her once I can find some. Thanks

Is the skin on the bald patch red or hot to touch at all?
Can you see whether the fur is totally missing or whether the hair stumps are still there but the top has been chewed or rubbed off - which is easier to see if your gerbil in on the Agouti side (Agouti/Argente) as the hair is a different colour at the bottom from the top...

The skin isn't red or hot to touch at all. I would say the fur is totally missing but it's really hard to tell, shes the pied black in my avatar. I hope I've done it right but see if the photo helps at all

I wouldn't say it's serious, I'd say it's stress or over grooming

Weird - it is definitely only the tail hair - the main body hair stops quite cleanly a few cms from the body and that is fine.
In that case I would tentatively suggest that it wasn't being rubbed off as that is a nice solid line against the different haired areas?
It certainly doesn't look sore, but it doesn't look healthy does it? Not sure about gerbil skin conditions - hopefully someone else with more experience can answer?
Unless you have a local vet who can take a look incase it is an eczema-type condition? They won't have to be a small animal specialist to spot a skin condition - just check the consultation fee beforehand and tell them you are just checking with them on their opinion and you want them to check with you before dispensing any drugs (rather than just charging you for everything). That way you have a say over what they prescribe - if you even want anything from them - as I am sure there are over-the-counter remedies you can try for most skin conditions once you know what it is...

How is the tail going? Has the hair grown back?
