Hi, my gerbil has been on baytril for 10 days now for a nasty open wound on her scent gland, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to have healed at all. The wound looked cleaner for a while but then loads of pus appeared again. This may be partly due to her picking/nibbling at it, but now I don't know what to do. I don't want to overdo the antibiotic and just carry on if it's having no effect but if I stop now is it likely that she'll get worse?

Trip to the vet again?
We've had mixed success with antibiotics, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. More often that not, then their health goes downhill then there's no way back. Prepare for the worst, if they get better then be happy.

If the antibiotic isn't working, then most likely the infectious agent isn't sensitive to that antibiotic. Did your vet do a wound culture?

At the moment she is still exhibiting normal gerbil behaviour, hasn't lost any weight, and the only indication she gives that the wound is hurting her is that she hunches over and picks at it from time to time, which is probably why it is taking so long to heal (or is going backwards with regards to healing ) The vet didn't do a culture of any type, she just looked at it and decided to prescribe baytril. She said carry on for a few days after the course had officially finished, that was 2 days ago. I'm still going at the moment until the baytril she gave me runs out but how long is it safe to carry on giving it to them for?

What bedding are you on? My gerbil had an itchy sore on his belly, and I changed from the shavings and hay to the Carefresh-type soft papery bedding and it seemed to clear up a treat.
I presumed that the shavings and hay were scratching or poking it as he moved around - so I thought - soft paper can't hurt him? Maybe it is worth a try for you - or just newspaper (like they recommend after the SGT op for recovery...
I also took out the large wooden platform that he was rubbing himself on too.

If you've completed the course of Baytril, and it's still looking actively infected, you need to go back to the vet. You definitely need a different antibiotic, and the vet may need to clean out the area and/or glue it shut.
