Hi guys, I had a litter of three recently (four, but one was still born) The parents are a Spotted Light Colorpoint Nutmeg with Pp And a Red Eyed Honey, Aa CC. Two of the pups appear like Spotted Light Nutmegs (in my opinion, just a guess) But the male pup I'm not yet sure. I know one or the other is a possibility; Especially if the other two are Nutmeg, then he has a chance of being a Saffron too. I tried to look up Pups that are Sp. Light Saffron and Strawberry Cream but had no luck. Is there any physical difference? Or is it like a Spotted DEH and Spotted Nutmeg, where you don't know unless it's a Nutmeg and later moults? Saffron don't molt so I was wondering if I'm in one of those predicaments of not knowing for sure. xD; I've never had any red eyed, ee pups before so I'm looking to see if anyone here has some knowledge. Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

You won't be able to tell until he's fully furred. Sp. Lt. Saffron will have a more defined pattern, like Sp. Nutmeg. Especially if the siblings are Spot or Pied rather than Mottled. Strawberry Cream will have splashes of white all over.

I've never heard of a Strawberry Cream - and I like the sound of it!
Is it a heavily variegated Saffron then - I will have to have a look online myself...

Strawberry Cream is a newer name-- it's a Red-Eyed Honey Cream.

Here are two pictures (same guy), of what I was told by Shooting Star, is a Strawberry Cream. He has that "racing stripe" look. So lots of white and little colour. He has colour on his tail, head and some coloured spots on his back. And just looking at him now, his colour is fading. I'm not sure of his genetics, but would love to find out.

Nice - I think I may have had a few of them then! They darkened with age though and got more ginger bits - but as pups were very white with only ginger heads and bums. Yours is so much paler all over...

From what I have seen/read Strawberry Creams are REHC. The picture of mine (Doctor) was taken when he was about a year old. Now he is over two and as I said, his colour is fading,so I would assume he has ee(f).

As he's still growing in more fur, I'm sort of seeing he has more of the honey color than white- But like Shooting Star said, need more time to know for sure. I looked up more strawberry cream pups vs Sp L Saffron and saw the difference (later in pup age). I was hoping at least one of the three would be Aa but looks like they're all aa pups so far. Lol! Thanks! I'll check him next week

Not sure if today's photos will be any help but he doesn't look like what honey cream/strawberry cream I've had/seen. He has more honey coloring than white, so I'm thinking light Saffron? I didn't fully list their parents' genes just the important parts but they're Dad is Spotted Light Colorpoint Nutmeg, aa cbch ee G Pp Spsp /old fashion in genes, sorry Mom is a normal REH, Aa CC ee G pp I'm sure the other two black eyed pups are Light Nutmegs? I expected the parents to have only lightened coat offspring but thought for sure LDEH would show up most. Haha! Well it was only a litter of three so the odds of colors are quite wacky. They'll be having a second litter after their first so maybe the next will have non-spotted to tell them apart.

Yes, with a colourpoint parent and both parents having ee - there are only the 4 colours you could get for sure and all of them would be lightened anyway (so LDEH, LREH, LNut and LSaffron).
However, not only do you have the weaker and the stronger of the cp genes in the mix, but the cp genes themselves are temperature sensitive so they could be be slightly different in appearance anyway - added to the spotting gene which can take away some or none of the colour too! You really do have a total mix up!
Also, it is possible there is an uw(d) in there on both parents too which would open up the Polars and the SNuts.
And are you sure the mum is a CC REH - as she could also have a cp gene which would open up even more colours - but you are right - only 3 pups doesn't really show you all the genes in play here.

Thank you fysha and betty I can provide images of their Mother, but I was certain because she is such a rich, dark colored REH. She is the darkest REH I've had as of yet! These are the parents <-taken with flash Hope the lighting doesn't effect what she may be. I'm actually new/have not learned about the uw(d) gene. I'd love some information on it! I had no idea my gerbils could have it. Nor did I know you can get other colors from it 0.0 I thought you had to obtain Polar fox and Silver Nutmeg via gg lines only. That's awesome!

Yep, Mom is a CC-REH, and the pups are Spot Lt Nutmeg and Spot Lt Saffron. Uw is new nomenclature, as our G mutations are actually homologous to the Underwhite series of alleles in mice. So Uw = G, uw[d] = g, uw = g[x] (underwhite cream, working name "satin", very rare).

Sorry to get you all excited there, no new genes found.
I was trained up on the u genes rather than using g.
