My gerbil is 9 weeks old and we believe he had a stroke because when I got him, he was paralyzed from the waist down, but now he's moving around pretty well, but still not normally. He cannot sit back on his hind legs like a normal gerbil. At first I was worried about getting another gerbil because of the possibility the "healthier" one would hurt him, but he seems to be getting a little lonely. If I put a divider of sorts in the tank that they can still smell each other and interact without being able to get to each other for the first couple days, would that help?

Actually, it's normal to introduce gerbils to each other using a split cage with a wire screen divider in the middle. There are other important aspects of managing the introduction; if you search the forum for split cage you will find a wealth of information on how to do it.

Oh dear, poor little mite - how does he eat properly with his front paws if he can't take the weight off them - does he eat laying on his belly?
I would also be very thoughtful about who you split him to for the very reason you state. I have a disabled gerbil whose 'friend' is getting very old and I will have to split her to a new friend - but some combinations work better than others.
The best thing you could do here is start a new thread in the Behaviour & Introduction Section with a few photos of your little chap and maybe a video of how he moves and eats so those who are more expert in introductions can advise on the best pairing. I am not expert but I think you would probably need to find a gerbil who was already the chosen 'dominant one' but super chilled like a retired older mum or dad - and to do it while your one is still young. But best wait for those more experienced splitters to comment. They might not see your thread in this section.
Good luck!
