Today the kids managed to open the cage and tip in about half the tub of pumpkin seeds I set aside as treats! By the time I realised what had happened they must have had 6 or 7 each. Do I need to worry about that? They usually limited to a couple a day as I know they are fattening but are they dangerous if eaten in quantity like that?

I bet they were happy!
Gerbils won't overeat to the point of bursting but they will certainly have taken advantage of their glut like any animal. I have given mine more than 6 when I drop a pinchful into a cage of 3 or 4 gerbs. It's possible one could eat them all while the others are sleeping - but I don't think they will be dangerous in such low levels for just one day.
It may be a lot of fat for their tiny tummies though (not sure on quantities) so perhaps avoid any more for a few days and perhaps also limit their wet food (fruit and salad things) too so they are only eating their normal kibble and small amounts of tough veg. I suppose after a glut of chocolate - the last things you give kids is more sweets!
