We have a lot of gerbils with the majority being under a year old. So at the moment, if anyone needs vet treatment it's not such a big deal as it only tends to happen one at a time. But with vet fees being so expensive I want to start putting some money aside each month so as they get older we'll have a pot of money available to help keep everybody happy & healthy for as long as we can.
I reckon we have a good 12 months before it starts to get expensive & even then a good proportion may never need to see a vet. Our past experience has been lucky in that none have ever needed huge amounts of treatment even in old age. But with such a large number now there are bound to be a few who'll need help. So, for those of you who have or have had a lot of gerbils, can you tell me what proportion of your oldies have needed more than average amounts of vet treatment as they've aged? I know this will vary a lot but I just want to be able to gauge how much of a slush fund we're likely to need.

Personally it is a tiny proportion.
I have had no real age related illnesses apart from sudden symptoms and then pts as the issue doesn't really have a treatment plan.
The most I have spent on them is not for age related problems, mainly fight clean ups and the one scent gland tumour.

Ok - thanks. Our gerbil numbers increased from the beginning of this year & so far we've only had 2 vet visits. One was a nursing/pregnant mum with a suspected broken leg (they couldn't help her but thankfully she healed well on her own before the pups were born) and the other was a boy who had a messy/sore nose after I put hay in for them & a course of antibiotics sorted him out nicely. So if they don't seem to suffer more illnesses as they get older then that's great.
