Hello hope everyone on the gerbil forum is doing well! Well I seem to have a mystery under my hands today. I went to the gerbil room to feed and refill the water as per usual and I noticed all my paper towel and papers had been chewed! I freaked out and checked everyone all 25 gerbils were tucked in their cages and 10 mice in theirs. I should mention one of my gerbil lids were off slightly. I believe that my two gerbils Link and AJ escaped last night however would a gerbil be smart enough to return their cage afterwards? Both were in their tunnels when I looked in so I'm not 100% if it was them or not. I've set up my three live traps to see if we have a mouse which I doubt the five years we have never had one plus our six cats. What do you guys think could be going on???

I think gerbils may return to their cage because that's where their nest is. One of our girls, who got out-of-cage time to run all over the room, would always return to the table where her cage was when she had enough and wanted to go back, so she clearly had a sense of orientation.
Keep us updated when you figure the mystery out!

Well nothing was caught last night so I'm thinking both my boys were the culprit. I'm just glad they are both safe and in their cages. Smart little guys! I've raised both from babies so they have lived in their tank all their lives! AJ was born with me and I adopted Link has a tiny little baby! I find it hilarious that they knew to return afterwards *shakes head* they spent a lot of time on the girls side from all the dropping I cleaned up yesterday well they must have had the time of their lives!! And they were snacking I found chewed sunflower seeds which are throw from the mouse cages lol. I'll let you guys know if anything changes!

My current trio did something similar. They'd chewed a hole through their cage and we only discovered it when the eldest gerbil of the 3 decided to pay a visit to our living room one evening. He casually walked in, without a care in the world and sent my poor mother screaming thinking we had rats. They must have been going in and out for days, helping themselves to the snacks stored on the side lol, clever creatures.
