If she is ill, you should take her to a vet. Respiratory infections are serious and unlikely to get better on their own. Going back to bed after a few minutes is not normal behaviour for most gerbils. The sooner you get her seen and treated, the better her chances of recovery will be.

I would advice taking her to a vet as well. I took my gerbil, Ginger, to a vet this week. He had scratched part of his ear and it was slightly swollen. I wasn't too worried about the ear (it didn't look bad), but the fact that Ginger hardly did anything but stayed in the nest made me really worried. The vet gave him some medicine, and the next day Ginger was pretty much back to his normal self, chewing cardboard, running around. It made me feel so much better to see him being his normal self again, definitely glad I spent the 17 pounds on a vet trip!
I asked the vet is it possible that Ginger is mostly hiding because he is feeling discomfort because of the ear, and he said yes. So, if your gerbil is mostly hiding, it probably means that she isn't feeling all well.

I can't. I wouldn't be the one driving it and the said person thinks it's just old age and said there's no point taking rodents to vets when I mentioned it today :/

Could you maybe get to a vets via bus/public transport? And do you have the money to pay for her to get seen yourself? I have to use the bus to take my gerbils in to the vets, it's takes about an hour with a little walking each way, but it's well worth it to me.

I can't :/ so I was wondering, can vets prescribe antibiotics if you ask them without them seeing the gerbil? Or can I buy it without going to a vet? I'm almost certain it's the respiratory infection.

They have to see the gerbil unfortunately, and you can't buy it elsewhere without a prescription.
But you could still try ringing your vet to seek their advice about the situation.

Shame, and I'm sorry to hear this.
I lost a gerbil today too. She was called Boo and was 3 and a half. She was eating mealworms to the end...
Bless them both.

That is a shame, they do say that before death people rally round bit, so maybe it's the same with animals, unfortunately it tends to just give you a feeling of false hope.
Sorry for your loss Fluffy, and yours too Betty.

sorry to hear, it does take time when your pet passes and no longer around, just know you gave her a good life and take it easy on yourself. Do you have other pets? that always helps me, being around critters.

I only have the 6 month old gerbil that I got after her sister died but it's not friendly and sweet like she is so it doesn't help
