I have 2 young female gerbils approximately 4 months old now and have always been fine together. Was cleaning the out yesterday they were in the play tub and the larger female started to attack the small female. When i put them back in the tank she soon started to attack again, so i gave them lots of toys food and nesting material which helped and both had a sand bath. They then made a bed together and slept there all night and have been fine again today sleeping together and pottering around until about an hour ago. The larger female again has decided to start attacking the small female chasing her around the tank and biting her. The small female again has started hiding from the attacks under toys and on hanging bridges. Each time she comes down she is attacked or the female will search her out to attack again. I had gerbils for a long time and seen declaning\mixed gerbils previously and currently have 2 groups however I have never experienced this sort of staggered attacks. These two females were purchased together at eight weeks old. Any advice? I was hoping not to result in splitting them but think i may end up doing a split cage at this rate in the hope of going back together again in the future. I am concerned she may attack her seriously overnight. Many thanks im advance

If she's already chasing her and biting her I'd split them now. Sounds like a declan to me, I had the same with some of our girls, after 7 months living together (and believed to be litter siblings) the biggest one suddenly started attacking the smallest one in bursts over 1 day, the little one was afraid and would hide in tunnels to get better defence, unfortunately just before I managed to split them up the big one got a really good attack in on the little one, her rump and back legs/feet were covered in bites and she was limping for at least a week afterwards (she's fine now).

thanks, i thought so too so i have split them, the smaller female is still sitting on top of the bridges- i dont think she trusts the other one is not near. These are from the same litter also apparently. I doubt they will go back together as she has a clear hatred towards her now but oh well. Good job i have numerous tanks! thank you

No problem, I'm glad you managed to split them without any serious injuries. She will take a few days to work out that she is now safe, mine did the same (luckily mine were a trio so I left the third sister in with the little one and those two are very happy together. The aggressor is on her own but seems pretty happy too).
