We have 4 males gerbils that have always been together, 2 of them have just had a major fight which has left them both covered in blood. They live in a 2 storey cage so I have split them up and put 2 gerbils together in the top cage and 2 in the bottom. This happened about an hour ago. They are both moving around ok now but I don't know what to do. Should I keep them as pairs now or could I put them back together. They were really fighting, I had to prize them apart.

I would keep them apart, you don't want to take any chances. They can't get into the other cage at all?

Well another fight has occurred, this time it's grizzy and cuddlepuff, last time it was grizzly and bob. I have removed cuddlepuff and put him back with the other 2 and left grizzy alone. I feel awful as I know they shouldn't be kept alone but it was another massive fight ending in bloodshed.

Don't feel awful, you did what had to be done. Gerbils can have happy, healthy lives living alone, too. And can I just comment, on an unrelated note, how amazing your cage looks? You did a really nice job with it!

Thank you so much, I've just split the bottom cage and adapted it so the other gerbils can come down and see grizzy so he's not completely alone now and they all seem happy again

Cuddlepuff is looking so much better now, they're very hardy these gerbils, I honestly thought they wouldn't survive after the fights but they've soon healed up and look completely back to normal now

glad they look back to normal and doing ok-gerbils are very hardy even when it's an illness you think will take them from you.

Gerbil fights can create some truly horrific injuries, but with time, care and painkillers (in the worst cases) these little ones just bounce right back.
Spotting an unbalanced clan beforehand is the only way to prevent these fights - but even to the experienced - it isn't always clear. I am much more likely to separate my clans before, maybe, I need to, but I just can't bear to see them all battle-scarred.
Mind you - as a result - I am now a split-tank expert!

vimeo.com/199530354Just a quick update and video. The gerbils are still split with grizzly living on his own in the bottom half of the cage. The other 3 gerbils all come down to see him and sniff each other through the mesh but I don't think I'm going to risk trying them back together. Grizzly seems happy, he's a very busy gerbil, rearranging his space.
