Hi everyone, Im new here. I have 2 hamsters and they have great care. I am going to be getiing 2ngerbils soon. I am wondering what accessories or toys or hides or whatever, will make my cage more natural. I have a 40 gallon breeder tank for my 2 gerbil males, and I need some natural products. I also want some for my hamsters.
Right now I have:

The brand Niteangel is a great brand just stay away from their bark tunnel thing as the wood is not safe for some reason but except for that they are great. I got my multi-chamber hideout from them and their 8 inch transparent wheel which I love. I reccomend adding hay to their bedding as it creates a natural feel. If you want to bedding to be natural you can use a brown paper bedding mixed with aspen shavings. Also is this the real maple syrup or her friend? If it isn’t your friend I would just like to let you know that they caused a bit of trouble and possibly caused your account to be banned. I would suggest telling your friend not to use your accout anymore change the password or something and I can tell the moderator here not to bann your account since that was your friends fault and not yours. I can send you the post if needed.

This isn’t that natural but not exactly unnatural. I cleaned a large mason jar and gave it to my gerbils as a hideout and they love it. It is also super great because you can see what they are doing while they are in it.

Here’s a video for a natural hamster enclosure but also perfect for gerbils: m.youtube.com/watch?v=oja6B-Jl4jwI suggest watching the YouTube channel Victoria Raechel and Erins Animals for hamsters (also a lot of the information can be used for gerbils,) and Erins Ark and Fins and Whiskers for gerbil care.

My lone girl Rolo (her sister passed away and she's doing fine by herself - I always have to explain that first ) loves her coconut hide. It gives a natural feel to her tank and looks really cool, maybe you could get one of them? She has this one: media.petsathome.com/wcsstore/pah-cas01/300/7116398_01.jpg

You can get the hanging ones that are for birds but there are also ones that don’t hang.

It's been a few years since your post, your interest in creating a natural environment for your hamsters and gerbils is timeless! Natural setups can greatly benefit your pets' physical and mental well-being. For your 40-gallon tank, consider adding untreated wood branches for climbing and chewing, providing a natural feel and promoting natural behaviors. Coconut hides or wooden shelters can offer cozy spots for your pets to rest and hide. If you're still looking for ideas, you might find this guide helpful: hamsternow.com/creating-a-hamster-paradise-the-ideal-hamster-cage-setup. Your pets will appreciate the effort you put into making their home more natural and engaging!

Like how others have mentioned, sprinkling some hay is a very good way to make a cage appear more natural. Niteangel also has sprays that really sell the natural vibe. You mentioned already having some sprays, but the Niteangel packs have a lot of variety and some colorful flowers that can add a natural pop of color. Also, I buy Nature's Salad by a company called Rosewood that is great for their cages. It's basically a mixture of dried flowers/herbs that not only looks pretty, but the gerbils love foraging for and snacking on. I also find that if you mix your own food, sprinkling it around can make the tank look very natural. If you buy commercial food that would also work, but sometimes it has dyes in it that can make the tank look artificial (scatter feeding is still beneficial mentally though). Also, if you get plain loofa sponge, completely undyed, the gerbils love to chew them and they look very natural. (just search "loofa sponge uncut" on Amazon and you'll find some) Also some paper towel tubes have that nice brown color that appears natural. I think you will also find that gerbils are much more aggressive chewers than hamsters, so anything that you can give them to nibble on they will appreciate! Best of luck!
