Have y’all seen gerbil leashes before?! Just found one on Amazon today. I’m only a two month gerbil owner but they don’t look good for a gerbil... Anyone have experience with these?

Those are not safe for gerbils or hamsters. Small animals like gerbils are too fragile to be walked. If you tug on them or anything it can injure them. I wouldn’t get them.

Found this on Hamster Hideout: “ hamster leashes are something you'd want to stay away from. They aren't like dogs or animals that are larger. Hamsters are fragile and they might get strangled or fatally injured while using these leashes.”

And a gerbil could chew out of a leash in seconds....

And a gerbil could chew out of a leash in seconds.... Very true.

Yup! My thoughts too. Strange people would be making stuff like this....

They make things to appeal to humans, not gerbils unfortunately.
I have noticed that things are slowly getting better though (at least in the UK). I haven't seen one of those gerbil harnesses in a pet shop in years, and I also see a lot less plastic stuff, fluffy bedding and Rotastak type cages in pet shops. My local independent pet shop used to be full of these harnesses, the racing car things and other tat, and now they actually sell some really nice stuff.

That’s great news! Unfortunately the pet shops around here are not so considerate

I hate seeing these "harnesses" - they look so cruel and painful, using one on a gerbil, hamster, Guinea Pig etc would almost certainly break their spine from the pressure you'd be putting on them, they don't have the strength in their body to support it like a dog or cat does. Makes me so sad :(

Hmm, I don't know about breaking their spine, it would have to be really heavy to do that!
I did stumble across one youtube video where a (really dumb!) young lad was taking his gerbil for a walk across snow on ice!! Utterly stupid because the cold could've of given it hyperthermia of course, and that he could've slipped over and killed his gerbil! Which btw he very nearly did as he did slip at one point! Interestingly the gerbil did chose to often walk on the snow or ice!
Anyway, my point of mentioning this video is that the gerbil was quite easily hopping and running with his harness and leash on, and possibly the only thing the boy got right was that he didn't pull on the leash at all, in fact the gerbil was leading him around, lol. He actually could have just stopped to e.g stop the gerbil going on the road, yes he did allow that! (although it was only the edge of a quiet road, but still). This is the video - www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcEfu2UnoM8I still think they're a bad idea though, they could easily panic in it for example, not to mention a brave cat could try to attack it? etc
