Hi, My gerbil has suddenly and dramatically gained 23 grams (65-88 grams) in the last week. He's really big around the middle, and his tummy is really firm. About 3 weeks ago, I introduced him to a new male. I saw humping, but didn't really think anything of it. Now, after checking my gerbil thoroughly, I don't really see any bulge around the scrotum area where its supposed to be. However, I don't see any nipples either. Is there any other way to sex a gerbil? I can't quite figure it out. this will tell me whether he is pregnant or if I have to worry about underlying heart conditions or cancer (the only other way a gerbil can get that big so quickly). I changed his diet a week and a half ago from oxbow to vita prima .

Gerbils' nipples aren't usually visible as they're covered by fur. There isn't really another way to sex a gerbil other than visually inspecting for the presence of a scrotum or a vaginal opening, and also looking at the distance between the anus and the urethra. If you've looked and you're not sure, try to take a photo (or a video, if it's easier) and post it here. It's best to get this sorted as soon as possible as if a gerbil is pregnant, they usually only get so large at the very end, and if that's the case, you ideally want to get them separated before the first litter is born so you don't end up with a second. Have a look at the photos in this thread if you haven't already.

If you don't see obvious testicles I'm strongly suspecting you've got a pregnant female ready to give birth. If you are unable to accommodate two litters, remove the male immediately or he will impregnate the female on the day she gives birth. If you can accommodate two litters you can leave dad to help raise them, and remove him when the first litter is 4-5 weeks old.
You may need to make some adjustments to the tank (remove any tank toppers/shelves, reduce bedding, remove heavy objects a pup could get pinned under, remove the wheel, etc.).

A breeder has confirmed the sex, and Mr. Gerbil is now a Mrs. I am housing the expecting mother in a separate bin, allowing the two to still interact under supervision. I am going to start a thread asking what I need for my gerbil and his/her kids.
