Do you find any rhyme or reason to the nesting choices of the mamas? I've had several refuse to use the nest box and make a nest somewhere awful like the sand bath. Not sure what they're thinking.

I just assume that mama knows best, even if it makes not sense to me. It always amuses me when they split the litter into two nests. Surely that has to be more work?? But my females have done it with every litter, so they must have a reason for it.

Noone else really answered - but I think as said above.
I would say that almost all females nest underground anywhere they deem suitable in a normal deep-all-over set up. If they have different set up, climate, space, mindset etc, then maybe they can't just do the underground and so might make a nest elsewhere - like that one recently who nested up on the wire platform - and another in a wheel.
I haven't had one myself who made a crazy nest though, so I haven't had to worry about the pups safety in a strange place.
