Hi there, our gerbil is poorly - he seems very lethargic and a bit puffy - including his eyes, and is making a kind of clicking noise when he breathes. Could someone help please? I’m worried to put him through stress at the vet because he doesn’t like being handled at all (we have 3 other gerbils and he usually just sticks around with them).
Any advice would be appreciated - are there any investigations that we can do? Thanks in advance

Hello,
I would recommend taking him to the vet because the clicking sound could indicate a respiratory infection. It could also be fluid in his lungs, which would be quite uncomfortable for him.
In the meantime, keep him warm by putting a heating pad if you have one under one corner of the tank, or leaning a hot water bottle against the tank. Always make sure there's a cool area they can retreat to. Try to get him to eat something. Mashed/pureed fruit can be good as it provides both energy and liquid and it's very palatable.
Hopefully he'll feel better soon.

Thank you! We’ve booked an emergency appointment now and have him on a heating pad.
