I could be wrong but one of my gerbils feels abnormally skinny. I can't remember how much she normally weighs but I believe it's closer to 70g, I weighed her today at 62. She's not emaciated but she just seems skinnier. As far as I know she is eating normally, I checked her body and teeth to see if anything was wrong and nothing. She is 2 years old. Does anyone know what issues could have potentially caused it?

Firstly angel - if you haven't already - check that she still has her 4 long front teeth, and that none are overly long. This is the number one reason for unexplained/recently noticed weight loss. Easy to confirm - and easy to sort out.

Easy to confirm - and easy to sort out. That was the first thing I checked, they look normal to me. Her two bottom teeth have a tiny gap in between them but I think that’s normal? They are all a normal length.

Did you find out what the issue was with this little lady?
Did her weight stablise, or did she start to re-gain a few grams after you posted and changed a few things for her?

I personally keep a written record of their weights, even if you have a good memory, you're not going to remember it months later! That reminds me, I need to up date my boys weight table here.....

Sorry I haven't been active on here in a while. I haven't weighed either of them since I first posted about it because I have been dealing with a potential mite issue, and the issues with this gerbil kind of fell to the wayside. I will weigh her again but she doesn't look like she lost any more weight after I posted this thread. I took one of my other gerbils to the vet the other day because he was having some problems and we both suspected mites so she gave me an oral ivermectin for all of them, perhaps the mites were what caused her weight loss. I suspect that the bedding was what brought on the mites, so now I always ensure to freeze the bedding before using it, only problem is that I recently bought a huge bag of aspen bedding that won't fit in my freezer so I'm going to have to use someone else's freezer to freeze the bedding for a couple of days before giving them all the ivermectin treatment. Once I've frozen the bedding I will treat them all and see if her weight improves.
