Should a maze nest box be on stilts within the bedding for a gerbil cage or set under all the bedding on the floor of the cage with no stilts? The type of nest box with several chambers and a removable lid is what I mean. The removable lid might be of no use for a gerbil cage for many reasons, but leaving the lid on could still be used as a nest box. I just don't know if I just put it in without stilts on the floor of the cage or if I put it on stilts so I can see them come out the top hole.
And I have seen some take the lid off and set the nest box in the cage vertically against one wall of the cage and watch the gerbils crawl all around in it as it would only be partly buried in bedding. I guess it would be a fun playground for them. Any opinions, advice or input on this?? Thanks!

I've never heard the sideways thing, but that seems really cool! Personally, I have a 3-chamber nesting box with an entry hole on the side which I put on the bottom of the tank. I usually put most of the bedding on the other side of the tank to avoid it getting covered (also their wheels are glued onto the lid). I don't think it matters all that much to be honest and its up to personal opinion. As I said, I prefer mine on the floor because since there's no bottom, it feels off to me to have them walk into the hut and just sink into the bedding. But there is an argument to be made that it is a good way for gerbils to burrow. It's up to you!

I have this same question as I have a maze box for my gerbils to put into their cage next cage cleaning. I am thinking about putting it on stilts. I also have a hamster and I know there are a different animal, but they like their maze boxes on stilts because of liking to burrow down under them. I think gerbils might like that too. It would at the very least give them something different to have instead of everything at the bottom of the cage. LOL! I have seen the sideways thing too. But it looks like that bedding in that tank is not very deep. But gerbils would probably like to crawl through it no matter which way it goes into their cage.
