Is it a given that sand bath sand will be tracked outside the sand bath container and just all over the topper? My girls love their sand bath especially Coco. I try to leave the sand bath in all the time because they love it. But the sand is everywhere. I am sure it doesn't bother them. LOL! Should I clean it daily or just leave it until next cage cleaning?

Unfortunately, yes They get sand on their feet and then it goes everywhere. And once in a while, a gerbil will get a sudden urge to kick all of the sand out of the sand bath. When I spot clean I tend to sweep all the sand etc off the platforms (with a paint brush) but there's no need to clean it every day.

Personally, I give my gerbils limited access to the sand bath because I've heard the fine dust/sand particles can lead to respiratory infections. They get it for one day a week, which limits the amount of dust/sand that escapes the container. But as far as your situation goes, there's no need to clean the dust daily- I'd leave it there until next cleaning.

All of my gerbils absolutely love their sand baths so I leave it for them permanently and sweep up every so often, it depends how much sand there is. Their natural habitat is sand and the amount of cleaning ours do I think they’d be lost without it.
I actually have 2 baths. One in an old large rectangular casserole type dish which is in their outdoor enclosure - this is the one they stretch and wriggle in and absolutely adore. I usually have a bowl inside their enclosure but the lady I rescued my latest pair off gave me one. I think she may have made it. It’s a wooden box with a Perspex front and 2 holes in a hinged lid so they hop into it, clean themselves and hop back out. It’s genius! When I have chance I’ll take a photo and upload it a pic. It certainly sorts the sand dilemma so I now keep that in their tank. I so far haven’t had any respiratory issues.

I have a sand bath that is all acrylic with a wooden lid with a hole in the lid. They hop and and out all the time. Cream loves to dig in it and Coco loves to roll around in it. It does a pretty good job keeping the sand contained but they do track the sand all over the topper when they get out of it.

Maybe it was a shop bought one. It's not something I've seen before but it does make a difference to the amount of sand that goes everywhere. When I used a bowl the sand would go all over the place from them flicking it up. I've changed things around since this picture and have it on top of a wooden table type thing so that I can just pick the table out and upend into the bin.

That is a really nice sand bath. Here is mine and you can see the sand everywhere. Cream did kick sand out of a sand bath when I had one with a side opening. I thought this top opening would do better and it does. The sand that gets out now is just from their feet tracking it out.

Oooh I love that. What brand is it?
I'm surprised they manage to get the sand out of the hole on that one. You could always try lowering the sand level in there as you have quite a lot in and in reality they don't need it to be so deep if they are relative youngsters as they would be able to jump out with ease. Failing that you could put a rock or branch in to make it easier for them to hop out.

Failing that you could put a rock or branch in to make it easier for them to hop out. I got it on Amazon. It is a Kathson Hamster Sand Bath. I liked the corner style. I could lower the sand level. I don't know if that would help. They are not kicking sand out....they are tracking sand out on their feet. I can feel and see sand all over the wooden topper level. And they are about a year old now and have no trouble getting in and out of this sand bath. They seem to like it a lot. They both use the sand bath daily. This is suppose to be a hamster sand bath. I have a dwarf hamster and he would have trouble getting in and out of this style sand bath without something to climb onto. Maybe a Syrian wouldn't have any issues with it. But I know my little Robo would. But it is great for Gerbils. As you know gerbils can really kick sand about!

Thank you for the paint brush idea to sweep up the sand. I have one of those little dustpan and brushes for hamster clean up, but a paint brush works so much better!
