Anyone use sand instead of wood chips/bedding? I've always wanted to give them a tank of sand.. but can they dig in it? Or does it just collapse on them? What about when it gets mixed with torn up cardboard? Can they make burrows and tunnels? ALso... Anyone ever give them sand to have pups in? My gerbil originally wanted to have her pups in her sandbath cage (was a small travel cage attached to the tank).. I was wondering, since sand is more *natural*, would they be less likely to develop any kind of respitory problems? I'm now using corn cob cause I heard it was the safest with pups. But today I was wondering about sand. Or would it not be safec ause it could collapse on them?

I've used sand in some tanks (see photo)! I like it very much, it looks great, and the gerbils love it too! However it smells earlier and is more work to clean! I make an "artificial burrow" for them with stones, bricks, and than I will fill that with sand! They will dig it out, and they will have a safe burrow. Some people also mix the sand with straw, hay, twigs, etc. to make it more safe! They won't develop respiratory problems from sand!

Just fill the tank with sand and possible some branches and stones! Than the gerbils will start to dig and it will look great after some while! They will do the work! The only work we have to do is to clean it! ;D

yeah maybe when the pups get older.. think for now I"d be afraid of them getting burried and sinking and drowning themselves lol Plus it's cheaper in the summer. ;D Do Mites like sand..??

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is better to use the larger grains. I would use something more like bird sand if it is available.
