I was upstairs when I remembered they were running low on water. So instead of going downstairs to get the bottle and bringing it back upstairs to refill it.. I just poured some water in a cup. Put the cup near the tank and took the cover off. Picked up one of the pups and one of my older gerbils decided to jumpout and was running around on the cover of the other tank. She always does this, but has never jumped off because it's so high. Then out of allll the places she could've jumped off.. she decides to try and jump in the cup. (which was a few inches lower than the tank) As I was putting the pup back, I saw her hanging stretched off the tank with her front paws on the side of the cup and her back legs were like kicking and sliding getting ready to go right in. She jumped so I went for the cup and her.. I kind of tried pushing the cup with one hand and tried catching her. I don't even know what I grabbed first it happened sooo fast. But the cup ended up knocked down and she fell into a huge puddle stomach first. Oh well, better then head first. I almost had a heart attack. Stupid gerbil,,she couldn't tell there was water in it? The sides were even wet..lol And it was a clear cup.. it didn't look like a dark tunnel...I could understand if it was dark..but it wasn't!

They are very curious, sometimes too curious! ;D But I think she has now learned that water is scary!

Catherine's gerbils today....she had them taking turns being in a plastic ball....and running all over! Some liked it better then others. The younger ones seem to do much better in it. Catherine's cat sat by and could have cared less...she never even tried to 'bat' the ball as it came near her! I have my tank all ready now...just need the 'new owners' to move in...hopefully on Thursday! Hugs, Cathie;)

Thats great lass Look frward to hearing about your new friends hmm wet gerbils I'm sure I've told this tale on here before but some may not hve heard it (aside: tell you waht typijg with a pllid balancing on your head is intersting) Anyways I had a tank of identical agouti pups, eyes still tight shut I was checking the pups. One dashed out of my hand, landing in a ju=g of water I had for filling water bottles. Of course I grabbed him quickly. Ever tried to hold a slippery. soaked pup? No chance. He immediately ran straight out of my hand and landed.........int he sand bath!!! What a sorry sigh he was!!! So I brushed off as much sand as I could, dried him and put him back in the nest. Next day, 8 happy little agoutis all had their eyes open and I couldn't tell which was the pup who had such a misadventure!!!

Just remember Gerbils are tough animals, as well as being, as Peter said, very nosy. For all our efforts there are going to be accidents, and as long as we do everythign in our power to prevent and handle them well when they happen, we need not feel guilty. I do recommend a good risk assessment now and again, taking into account anything that has happened with our gerbils and possibly what we have read as well. But pets are like kids, we never know what they'll do next!!!!

So true. I guess thier unpredictability is what endears us to them!
