I have found out that SOME gerbils do like to bathe.
Yesterday was cleanout day...not the easiest thing to do with the system I am using right now. It started with capturing my four youngsters and placing them into their play box. Then I started on my system.
Taking everything apart, I emptied everything, any left over foods, chewed cardboard, straw, poops, everything.
After washing every single item, I took five and a half hours to get it all back together again, with the help of my 16 yr old granddaughter.
My system is rotastak... and it has five levels, connected with tubes and so on. The weight and mischief of the babies mean I have to use tape on each external join... but THAT is NOT what the post is supposed to be about, is it.
In the playbox, I had placed a small bowl of fresh water for them. I had checked every few minutes to make sure the babies were not getting themselves drowned.... they were fine..... until I tried to catch them and put them back into their housing.
Those gerbils jumped into the water in front of my very eyes...shook thier heads a little when they found it was W E T water.....and wouldnt come out at all.every time I got one out, it ran back in again and it ROLLED in the bowl. I was surprised because I had thought that gerbs didnt like to be wet through.
Maybe its because they are youngsters... kids like water but as they grow up a bit, they take a dislike to it. Perhaps the gerbs are the same... the younger they are, then they like to play in water ?
They were definately playing.... if the water bowl was bigger, then I would say they were in there by mistake but it was only a three inch across bowl, right in the corner behind a toy. But those gerbs kept going back ito the water by their own choice.
