I have two gerbils, who are apparently very happy. However, I've read on this forum that we should try to keep them from getting bored. How can you tell if they are bored or not?
By the way, I can't pick mine up yet, they don't like it - but are familiar with the smell of my hands.

I think digging in the corners of tanks (stereotypical behaviour) is a sign of boredom but it's probably best to make sure that your gerbies have plenty to do to stop them from getting bored, plenty of cardboard to chew and plenty of bedding to dig/burrow in and it's also a good idea to get them out in a safe area (like a clean dry bath) to let them run around and play in, that way they get plenty of exercise and stimulation plus it'll give you the chance to handle them and get to know them and vice versa.

I move the things in there cage around every week, plus always have a good suply of cardboard tubes. I have also made a play cage out of old rotastack stuff I had and they have supervised play times in there.

always have cardboard and lots of tissue for them use. and of course, an exercise wheel helps a lot. and supervised play time out side of the tank at least once a week or more.
