Well since his fight with his brother Max, Squirt has been living alone. And since he wasn't able to climb up and down the tube because of his injury, Max and Teddy have forgotton who he is. Squirt hasn't been the same. He just sleeps alot in the top tank. He won't go to the bottom tank (where it is a split tank) unless I put him there. His injuries have practically healed but he still won't climb the tube to get to the bottom tank. I'm guessing cuz he's sad. So............my thought was maybe I need to get him a friend. How old should his friend be? A pup, right? 5 weeks?? And then once I find Squirt a friend, I'd hafta quarentine him, correct? Then do a split cage, right?
Poor Squirt....he looks so sad! I hope I'm able to find him a friend soon!

yes, i'd get him a young male about the age you described - 5-7 weeks old yes, quarantine the baby for about 1 week or mebbe 2 lol and then split cage ;D good luck in finding Squirt a friend and i hope that they get along better

the other option, which I would be tempted to do, is to put the baby with the older gerbil and quarantine both for a month or two. This does put your gerbil at risk but not any other animals you have, and means an easier, safer intro.

Thanx Ashgerbil and Doom for your replies.
I've since removed the tube from Squirt's tank and I'm trying to locate a breeder here in Georgia.

Just a quick update about Squirt..... I emailed a breeder here in the Georgia area, but I haven't heard from this person. I was really wanting to buy Squirt a friend from a breeder. Well today, I was able to leave work a little early and when my boss asked me what I was gonna do, I just blurted out that I was gonna try to find a friend for Squirt. I dunno why I said that, though. Maybe it was fate? So I went to Petsmart which is by my work and I found 2 older black gerbies (which I really wanted buy, but I didn't). So then I drove to Petco which i near my house. And guess what? I found a lone baby gerbie. He was receptive and he looked happy. So I bought him. He's now quarentined down stairs here in the computer room while the rest of the group is upstairs in the dining room. Hopefully, he's okay and has no "cooties". We've named him Kurt. He soooo cute!!!!!

Thanx you guys! I couldn't help but to take him home with me. And what's really strange is that I've NEVER seen baby gerbils at the pet stores. So it must have been fate, right? *sighs* Yeah, I too hope lil Kurt is healthy and that him and Squirt get along. Squirt seems very pleased that he will have a tank mate. Or at least, that's what I think he's telling me when I talk to him about Kurt. LOL, he has big feet, too!

I would like to update this and let you all know that things *seem* to be going well between Squirt and Kurt. We split tanked them on Friday and then Saturday afternoon, we had them swap sides. Well by evening, Kurt wasn't in his swapped side. Instead, he somehow manged to climb over the divider and went back to his side of the tank with Squirt there. So I put Kurt back on the other side and wouldn't you know it? He climbed over the divider again (even though I *thought* I had completely fixed the divider so he couldn't climb again). At that point, I simply left him on his side and moved Squirt back. We did supervised play Sunday night and yesterday after work, Kurt wasn't on his side again. He was sleeping with Squirt on Squirt's side of the tank! So now I've removed the divider. Apparently, they had different plans then what I was wanting them to do. Silly gerbies!!!
And Squirt seems soo much more happier now that he has a friend. I can definately see a change in his personality. Plus, he told me "thank you for my friend". LOL!!!! ;D

Hi Ashley and Caroline!
Yeah, Kurt and Squirt do appear to have been made for each other. They took so well towards each other and so soon. That makes me happy!
Oh Kurty's fur is what caught my eye along with him being all b y himself in the tank. I simply had to buy him. ;D Did ya ever have one of those feelings that you just knew something would work out?
Now only if the ball of Kurt's foot would go back to normal, I'd be even more happy.
PS: about The Monkees...yeah the're my favorite band!
