Does anyone have any neat ideas about how to entertain a solo gerbil? I am asking this regarding Lil, our solo female. We have decided that it's out of the question to try to introduce her to a friend as she is very skittish and aggressive. So, besides getting her a friend, what can I do to entertain her?
We already let her out to run around in the ball, let her out to run around on the couch (supervised), and pick her up (when she's not being a brat, which is rarely!). She also gets plenty of cardboard to shred in her tank.
Ideas?
(P.S. Today we had a turning point with taming her, though. She voluntarily got into Greg's hands--TWICE! Also, she briefly groomed the hair at my temple, near my glasses. Very exciting!)

I have a loner female currently, and have had one in the past. My girl right now, Shelby, is not real friendly and she likes to do her own thing. I have her situated next to two tanks of females, and i think she likes the company. Them over ther and her over here works well for her. I have tons of toys in her tank, wheel, wooden house, big cardboard tube and a glass jar plus hay/cardboard. I let her play in the play pen, and run along the table and shelves. She is a very happy little gerbil. I can say that b/c she has a nice clean coat is a good weight and active, I have my boys who declanned seperated right now, and they look like poop

Has she got a playpen ? The girlies are spoilt as they have a big playroom ;D but even if they didn't, I would still make some sort of area (or big flattish box) so they could explore and let off steam !!! You could put bigger things in a playpen for her to do Make sure you put a smallish cardboard box or long tube in there too - so you can catch her again! I'm going to post a new photo of the girlies playroom today so watch out for it in members photos! It might give you a few ideas - LOL Caroline

Well... we have a very large and awesome playpen that's permanently set up in our living room for the boys. Their scents are all over it, so we have never put The Girl in there.
Perhaps I could set up some sort of portable playpen... is it ok to put her right onto a hardwood floor? The floor isn't that dirty, but I'm worried that there would be pesticides or chemical residues or something, or she would eat the little pieces of dirt stuck in the cracks... that's the sort of stuff that Pep does... well, he eats EVERYTHING, even things that aren't really that edible, so nevermind.
Besides lots of cardboard boxes and tubes and glass or ceramic containers, is there anything else that's cool that I could put into the playpen?

I use the same play pen for all my gerbils without problems. I do clean it out and whipe the toys every once and a while. You could add a sand bath to the play pen, or a box filled with hay and a tube going into it. I have some mesh for them to climb, and a dish of treats

I also have a loner gerbil, although he is not cranky or skittish (at the mo) I think he does need extra attention.
I would try a playpen, I got him one and he loves it. Try empty fruit punnets in it (long story). I deffinetly gives him chance to play more and i can interact with him easier. Which he likes.
Hope helped.
