Today i've put Capri and the young Lilac foster I have together in a split cage (Hammy cage inside a 20G tank).
I'm a bit worried about the young Lilac, she's pretty scared. She is interested in Capri, but Capri is now showing some aggression towards the young girl. The poor baby is sitting with her head in teh toilet paper tube. I feel bad, taking her away from her Mother & sister, she's almost 9 weeks old, so it's not like she's a tiny baby.
I would have prefered to keep the momma rescue gerbil b/c she and i have grown a bit attached. But I know she will amke some family a wonderful gerbie pet.
Ack, i hate split cage into's I wish they went alot smoother and faster!

Update: This morning there is blood on the bars of the split cage, i checked both gerbils and it seems Capri took some good bites out of the babies tail It dosn't look to bad though.

Andrea, as you have noticed I know close to nothing when it comes to introductions, but if I had the chance to do mine again my priority would be stress from the gerbils. For example, if the baby gerbil you have is scared and stressed about the other one having another go at her tail that could prevent them from bonding. So maybe if you can make sure they are both comfortable in their own world but can see the advantage of company it will be easier. You could add a "wall" of plain paper or cardboard with mini holes so they can still smell each other but not get physical yet.
Just a thought.
And I don't know how true it is that when there has been blood an introduction can't be successful anymore, but maybe those gerbils still have a chance if the process goes very slowly.

That stinks. How large are the holes of the screen in the divider? I agree with coco. Maybe somehow you could physically protect little lilac from Capri, but still allow their scents to co-mingle. Then, when you remove the extra screen from the divider, they won't be like, "Whoa! Who's that other gerb!" They'll think, "Oh, everything still smells the same." You know?

There is no more biting (hasn't been since i saw the owy tail this morning). Though they are digging at one another. There is pretty much no litter around the divider. It's a hammy cage I am using as a split (all i have right now), things have gotten better, so i hope it just continues to do that. Thanks for the comments!
