They have to.... I noticed a bit of chasing in the 3 sisters tank yesterday. Tonight, I have 2 sisters with bite marks and blood in my tank. Why is this happening to me!!!! I havn't cleaned their tanks (was going to do it this week), they've been together all their lives, so over a year. Cadilac had less marks on her then Porche who is the bigger of the sisters. Guess Cadilla decided she wanted to be the boss of the tank now. So I have removed Cadilac, and placed her in my only spare, a bin cage. If I would have know this was going to happen, I would have not taken the baby foster I have as a split with Capri, and rather put Caddilac in with her. I'm so mad, this was such a great little tank of girls. I have learned I will no longer keep more then 2 gerbils in one tank, and i will no longer keep 15 gerbils... 6 max. I'm going to get started on building the second split tank, hopefully I can the put Cadillac and my loner female Shelby in a permenent split. I still have Dakota & Peej to worry about also, that 4 intro/splits i have to work out ACK! So far my father & son split is going very well. Let's hope it stays that way. sorry, i had to rant....

It sure is wierd. I don't remember having a declanning in a very long time, and the only one I can think of is a tank of six boys. I change bedding every 2 weeks (less if it doesn't need changing) and always leave some old bedding in (about 1 cup of it) to keep the scent. I keep hand cleanser handy and try to use it before and after handling gerbils of different clans. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your tanks are too big? As you know because of space, most of my tanks are 10 gallon, to two or three adult gerbils, and a lot of mine are in even smaller cages. It sounds cruel, but actually the pairs are very happy in them. The only tank right now that I see squabbling in occasionally is the big 35 (I think) gallon one in the family room with the two siamese boys. As Ritzieann suggested, sometimes small is good when it comes to keeping gerbils friendly with each other.

The three girls were in a 20G tall. I have 3 girls in a 20G long that are doing just fine. I use the hadn cleaner as you do when playing with the different rodents. So I duno. They do have alot of toys in the tank, should i try taking them all out and re0introducing them in neutral territory?
Anyone have any suggestions to try? the girls are not badly bitten, this is probably the least bad de-clan i have had (next to the toe biters, who are all ok too).

the likelihood is that the dominance hierarchy shifted and there was a fight to see who is top girl.

I agree Doom. I'm just wondering if they can ever be together again? Only because I've heard of others who have a Tiff and are fine after they figure out who's boss. Though I don't know it's worth to find out.

Actually, I find keeping gerbils in tanks that are too small, makes them not be able to get away from each other, and so they start getting agitated, ending in fighting.
Anyway, back to the OT, I had a pair of 3 females who started fighting one day, they had been living happily together for a year, but i guess Midnight decided she wanted to be the boss, so she almost killed Princess. I would say, don't put them back together, it probably wont work. I tried that with 4 males that fought, and they just started fighting again. Good luck with them.

It's risky I'm afraid. You can try split cage for a while but the likelihood is they would fight again sooner or later. My daughter made this mistake recently. Disorderly, my oldest female at 3 years and original breeder, was living with 3 daughters. One day Dissy was off-colour and one of ther daughters decided she wanted to be boss. So I split cage, 2 on each side. All seemed well until my daughter decided they would all be fine together. Unknown to me she put them together in the playpen, no problems. When she put them back in the tank, minus split, they fought. They now live in pairs in seperate tanks.

Ya. Well we have another split tank in the makings. And one of my Intro's seem to be doing well. So in the next week or two hopefully I can at least put the two loner females i now have into a permenent split together. I still have a male pair I want to try and re-intro also. The two sisters that are still together are doing very well.

My 3 full sisters are still together. In the past I've had to make a 3 way split in a 10 gallon. They'd never stay split more than a week in there, and they all got time out of the split.. but they were fine. Now that Kandice is not in there, (a girl from Sandy) the 3 full sisters are fine. I think it is worth a try, but when you take away the divider, make sure you're ready. I have a little squird bottle with cold water in it... and a wire thing, and usually a toob on hand to split trouble makers. Also, with this same group... I've found that anything they have to play or live in.... they have to ALL fit inside of it, or they can't have it! I've noticed that if they don't all fit, then they fight over how can be inside of the house/toob/cardboard box. I'd say try. Don't give up Andrea! I've got 18 personals... and 21 total. They're joys. Have some gerbie faith!
