I bought my breeding pair at Petco{at intervals to make sure they weren't related}, and they really didn't like selling them alone! The man who sold me Genesis kept telling me to go into the back room and pick out another boy. He finally put him in a box for me when I old him that I had a mate for him. So Petco is a great place to buy them! They had plenty of aspen bedding, all of the tanks had a full water bottle and food dish, as well as a mesh wheel. The man just had to pop his hand in to get Genesis out-- he was already tame! I kinda felt bad for taking him home and putting him in the bare breeding tank! Anyway, I digress.
Where in VA re you, Suzy? I live there, too! =)

I am in the Southwestern part, very rural.
The gerbils I have seen in Petco were beautiful colors; I'm glad the one you went to was looking out for the animals' well-being, too! I like the way people can bring them back if they decide they made a mistake. I also like the way they push adoption and don't have puppies or kittens!

I'm way up there, by Warrenton. But I go down to Charlottesville and Richmond to visit family.
I got my kitten{Not a kitten anymore, but she's soooo tiny}, Karina from an adoption drive at Petsmart. Mom refuses to get kitties unless they're from a shelter.
Yeah, they have a 15-day return policy. If your gerbil dies, gets sick, bites, or if you're not happy with it, they'll give you a refund or let you pick out a new one!

I have another question, if you guys don't mind. I'm guessing that when we get more gerbils it would be a good idea to quarantine them for awhile - by that I mean keep them across the room and out of the playpen. (I realize that we need to wash our hands in between handling different clans.) What do you think would be a good length of time for that?

I'd say a good week. Maybe 2. Buy some ornacycline{and keep it somewhere dark} and some .6 Pyrethins spray just in case.

It will be 2 weeks from Saturday, if my daughter decides she really wants to do it. We haven't told her about them yet. It seems like too long to wait to me, so I can only imagine what it will seem like to her! I want to make sure they are still there (and that they have no problem with us adopting all 3) before telling her about them later this week or early next week.

I had to wait that long to get Angel. It was torture!
If you cannot get them, but have your heart bent on taking in another pair, you can have some of Jenova's babies when they're born. -Winknudge-

That is such a sweet offer! Thank you! Since Jenova's babies will have you to look out for them and place them properly, hopefully they will never become lonely, unloved adults in need of rescuing! Those sad, lonely ones appeal to both of us more than babies (although I can't wait to see the piccies and watch yours grow up!) Jenova is a lovely name, by the way!

Hi, I'm new here. I own a gerbil website that has a lot of information on gerbils and how to deal with 2 gerbils that are near each other. Remember to keep males seperate ALWAYS, and some females too. And only mix males and females if you want cubs. I got my gerbil, Everest (was thinking about naming Snowball) from a teacher who bred hers. The female they had before was killed by her mate. So they replaced her with a new female, the mother of Everest. Sadly, my Everest passed away in december.... I would really love it if you would visit my website and look around, maybe even make an account of post a comment. I am 13, so I have no kids, but parents that bug me a lot.

Guest- She's not going to put them in the same TANK. Just the same room. Plus, gerbils live in same-sex pairs and male trios very happily! My girls Kaoru and Toshi lived out their years together!
Suzy- So far, I have homes for 7-9. But I'm afraid that I'll have someone cop out or that I'll be left with an even number of girls. {I plan on keeping a pair of girls and a pair of boys- One girl for Jenova, one for Angel, and 2 boys for Genesis.} So I may end up with lonelies, but I'm really hoping that's not the case.

I just read that site, and it has a lot of false information.
Male gerbils can live in groups up to four. Females can live in duos. NO gerbil should be left alone!
Veggies are not toxic.
There is no such ting as an albino gerbil. Even white ones have some pigment.
Plastic is NEVER suitable ANYWHERE in the tank.
Just thought I'd point that out!

I also just read the site and lots of the information is false! loki has only mentioned a few. I think you should do some more research and correct the information that you have on your site. One major point...males live happily in bigger groups than females! and it is extremely rare that a gerbil ISN'T happier in a group or pair! Also gerbil offspring are called pups not cubs
