How do I train my gerbils to use thier wheel? I have three gerbils and they are all together. One is older and already knows how to use it, but the other two are younger and don't seem to understand it at all. I am concerned because I used to have two gerbils and one used the wheel and the other diddn't, even in adulthood. Well, the one that didn't use the wheel died at an age of one year. I just don't want this to happen again, so I want to make sure all of my gerbils know how to use the wheel. How do I do this?

It might just be their personality....maybe they don't find it amusing. mine don't. They'll run in it for 5 seconds at a time that's about it. If your worried they're not getting enough excersise then you could put them in ball, one at a time of course, or put them in a play pen and they can go around and explore things.

My Mongolian gerbils do not use their wheels, only my fat-tailed gerbils do. But if I can remember it good you can train them by giving them sunflower seeds, I thought one member did that. I thought it was Queenofthenile or Andrea, but I'm not sure.

It's not that they don't know how, it's more that they don't want too or like it.

I don't know if you can train them to use the wheel or not. But with my gerbils, one loves the wheel and the other one doesn't want anything to do with it. I think it's due to their different personalities. It seems that some gerbils like wheels and others don't.

I just wish there was a way to get them to like it. Would't ALL gerbils like using a wheel?

I know how you feel, but I don't think all gerbils like wheels. One of my gerbils (Daryl) loves the wheel, but the other one (Patrick) won't use it at all. I thought that maybe after Patrick watched Daryl run in the wheel for a while, he'd want to try it out. But he doesn't. I've tried encouraging him to get in the wheel, but he's just not interested. I guess it's just not his thing. It's funny how they're such individuals.

Mine are lost without their wheel. They love wheels so much that one setup has 2! It is mostly up to the gerbils if they like the wheel or not. The 2 rescues I have never used the wheel before I got them and now they are absolutely love it and have trimmed down a little.

I just got wheels and mine like them. The bigger gerbil, Bubba needs to use it more than he is . Sweetie has figured out how to wedge herself between the wheel and the tank then use the pressure to keep the wheel from spinning so she can climb up to the top of the wheel and then jump off when the pressure is released and the wheel spins. It is almost like she is running on the outside of the wheel. Pretty amazing. WHo said gerbils aren't smart ?
