Hi everyone, just thought I would pass along a little helpful information concerning a very professional rodent vet in the Seattle area. Unfortunately, as is often the case, you don't discover a good vet untitl it's a bit too late. We lost our little lilac gerbil ray to pneumonia this past Sunday. Although Ray did not make it, I feel like the staff at "The Bird and Exotic Pet Clinic of Seattle" (206) 783-4538 did their best to help us try and treat Ray's illness. In particular, although I don't wish to exclude the wonderful support staff, "Dr. Dan" was most helpful and appears to be something of a specialist when it comes to rodents. He was even able to chest x-ray, (I saw the images myself!) Ray to help determine the cause of illness. Although treatment was not cheap, I was more than happy to pay for the expert treatment Ray recieved. Also, I just found out the humane society of seattle offers a personal cremation service for "pocket pets" for $40.00. Losing Ray has been extremely difficult, she (yes she) was one of those one in a thousand creatures whoose sudden illness came as a severe shock (no one so peaceful should have to suffer like she did). The above mentioned services made the ordeal more bearable. I hope others will find them helpful in their time of need Josh

Josh,
Although I do not live in Seattle, let alone on the west coast, your referral is much appreciated! I'm sorry you lost Ray. These types of doctors are hard to come by and I'm sure this information will be useful to other members of the forum.
Thanks again!
Jill

I wanted to let you know that the above listed vet recommended a place closer to where I live. I have personally not needed to take my furries to the vet (minus the one time and she died ) so I can not say how well they are, but the receptionist at the one in Seattle told me they were just as good. Des Moines Veterinary Hospital 21935 Pacific Highway South, Des Moines, WA 98198-7719 (206) 878-4111 I had called them after my Mimi died to confirm that they in fact do treat gerbils. Over the phone they were very nice. I was offered a necropsy for Mimi, which I probably would have done if she wasn't already buried. So now there are 2 vets for the Seattle area.
