At a thrift store Friday evening, I found an aquarium which appears to be a 20L size, with a lid included, for $20. (It's 12" wide and 30" long.) I thought that was a good deal, so I snatched it up. (I had my pair of gerbils in a 10-gallon aquarium, and they were doing ok in it, but I couldn't pass up the chance to get them a bigger tank. I wish I'd found this before I bought the 10-gallon tank, because it's a shame to not use the 10-gallon one, which is brand new. (Especially the lid - that thing was more expensive than the tank was!) I should have just made a lid out of hardware cloth!! Oh well, live and learn. I'll hold onto it and maybe be able to use it sometime in the future.
My gerbils seem to enjoy having more space to run, and it's nice having more room to work with for designing their cage layout.

You're correct, a 20L is 12"x30". I like bigger tanks, too, since there's more room for toys. My smallest tanks are 20Ls (3 of them) and you really got a good deal on yours, especially since you also got a lid. Congratulations! Maybe you could set up the 10-gallon as a playground? Fill it with a deep layer of bedding for digging (I use corncob for my playgrounds and my gerbils love digging and kicking it) and a few toys? It would be a handy place for your gerbils to play while cleaning their main tank. RW
