Today I found about 10 (probably more) small black bugs in my gerbils' food container. According to my mom, they have been in there for weeks. Are there any safety precautions I should take (other than buying new food)?

I would just throw out the food and bedding and just start over. As a precaution, you can freeze the food for a few days to kill any insects or bugs.

I you have bought food with bugs in it, I would bring it back to the pet shop or whereever you have purchased it. It should be clean! The freezing is a good idea!

I was also told to freeze any bulk food that you buy for about a week (you can take out a weeks worth to feed them in the mean time). At first, I wasn't buying bulk, but just recently started again and forgot about the freezing. I ended up with a bag full of bugs too. I would throw that stuff out, buy new, and freeze it for awhile.

I had the worst mite infestation from buying bulk food once. Now when I buy in bulk, I check out the bins really closely and if I do end up buying it, I freeze it for a week or so.
The bins at one store are gross. The food looks really old and moldy, a lot of crumbs..in a seed mixture. Smell weird.. Just doesn't look as fresh and whole as it would coming out of a bag.
