I have a colony of three male gerbils. today one of them is very wobbly and doesn't open his eyes. hes eating and I think hes drinking. he moves around very slowly and sometiems falls over. he's usually very energetic and lively constantly jumping and running around and climbing. We have an appointment at the vet later today but I just wonder if anyone has ideas what could be wrong with him.

It sounds like it could be a stroke- especially if it is an older gerbil. One good thing is that gerbils do have the ability to make a total recovery from strokes. Sometimes though they may have a large stroke followed by several smaller ones and then they may not recover. I have had one female die that way, but I have also have a male make a complete and total recover! Good luck, I wish you the best.

Keep him comfortable and warm until you can get him see by your vet. Make sure he is drinking, it's important for them to stay hydrated.
I have found some gerbils who have gone downhill fast perk right up with a little bit of warmth, either from just being held, or by placing a hot water filled glass jar in the tank with them.
Good luck!
