What protein content does everyone feed on average (to non pregnant/nursing gerbils)? I've read 12% is recommended yet on here people keep mentioning supplementing that with mealworms, rat food etc. Is that because the general feeling 12% is a little low, or do you all have breeding groups and I just haven't been around enough to realise?

I think that 12% is acceptable but we choose to add variety to thier diets and suppliment with mealworms, grasshoppers, yogurt and fruits and veggies. I think it is a choice not a necessity. You are correct however, if you have a pregnant or nursing mom, extra protien is required. Helps keep Mom from eating the babies in some cases.

Personally due to the fact that none of the pet shops round here sell gerbil spercific foods. Apart from Focus do it all, yes the local DIY shop!! they charge a small fortune for it too.. Our lot get a small amount of reggie rat, a pinch of parrot food and a pinch of lindseeds.
They seem to all do well on it and its especially good for the nursing mums. although I do have to keep an eye on the weight of our three batchelor boys.. they are on a diet right now! ..
