I've been buying food in bulk lately and the first time I did that was how I got mites. I want to start buying in bulk again because there is kind of more choices and it's cheap.. but how long should I leave it in the freezer? 1 week long enough or should I go longer? I keep my freezer as cold as it can get too..

A full week at 0 degrees F should do it.

Hello J In another thread, bugs in my food queenie suggested a few days. If you want to make sure maybe a week but that might not be necessary.
BTW what do you but in bulk? Do you buy the combo pack or separates and then mix them?? Thanks.

I did it for a week and a half and it didn't work. My gerbs got mites or lice..scratching.Luckilly it's only one clan scratching though.
I went to Petco and Petsuppliesplus, bought the food out of the bins. They have different seed mixes and things and it's cheaper by the pound. The corn is only like 29 cents a pound.
Oh well, I give up. For now on I buy from Petsmart and I buy the bagged food. I never got any mites from there. Or even Target, they sell the Kaytee Fiesta. lol.

J, are you sure your bugs came in the food? How about the bedding or something else?

Yeah, I'm sure. I've been using the same bag of bedding for a couple of months. I haven't bought any new wooden toys or anything. Only thing I added different was that food. I was talking to someone earlier..and they said the freezer might've just made the bugs hibernate or something. So when I took it out.. they like came back to life.

J, isn't your freezer really cold? (Mine is WAY below 0C)
Honestly, the freezing should kill the bugs, that's why you don't see bugs in winter. As for hibernating, it is a genetic process that is started by a reduction in daylength. It can't just happen in response to cold temperatures. So the mites/lice in your bedding wouldn't have been able to hibernate, they would have just died.
Is there anyway you could have brought the bugs in on your clothing? You said that only one tank appears to have the bugs. When you look in the food, do you see bugs in it?
