Any thoughts on alfalfa hay? I know it has a lot more protein than Timothy hay. Does anyone feed alfalfa hay?

Yes, I feed my gerbils a small chunk of alfalfa (a Hartz product called "Alfa-Chews") once a day or once every two days. They do seem to enjoy it, and although I can't see any physical improvements I've heard that it makes gerbils healthier.

Thanks, Peter, very helpful. I've been giving my gerbils a small amount of alfalfa hay every other day. I've read mixed opinions--some that it's very good for gerbils to have it, some that say it has too much protein and makes them fat. Good to know I've been doing the right thing. RW

I gave mine big handful this morning after reading the timothy thread (didn't even think to notice that there might be an issue for them between the two hays). I always have to have hay for my cavy, so I was like, hmmmm even if they don't eat it they can burrow with it. I'm not sure if they are eating any, but they do like to shear it into one inch long peices and work it into the bedding. Now my bedding is a strange mix of Carefresh, paper hreds, cardboard shreds and hay lol.
I tried the alfa chews when I fisrt got Lemmiwinks. Lemmi, Tribble (the cavy), and Rosie (roomie's rat) were all highly unimpressed. ...I still have half a bag....

I tried the chews and none of my little guys liked it. I used the hay and they love it! They at least like to chew it to bits. I am not sure that any is ingested but they have fun!
