I went to the green grocer today to get the stuff listed in a previous thread about mixing your own gerbil food. I found most of it...but I have a question about the rolled oats and the oat bran. They are basically powder. I didn't get the flour, I got the right stuff I think. But they are so small and powdery, how can the gerbils eat that?

Great question. I have no idea but can't wait for the answer since I may try mixing myself.
Do you have to buy in bulk? Does it come by the pound? Would it be better to get smaller quantities so that it stays fresher?

You can get rolled oats in the grocery store. It is the stuff oatmeal is made of - just flattened oats (it shouldn't be powdery). As for oat bran, I wasn't able to find it. I used bran flake cereal instead . I'm pretty sure oat bran is *supposed* to be powdery, so I don't know how the gerbs could eat it.
