Are ants ok to feed gerbils?? I have an ant problem here and use the bath tub as a play pen and sometimes there are a couple ants in there, should I just leave them for the gerbils or are they bad for them?

I am not sure if they are bad for them but I do know that Bubba, my male agouti caught and was eating an ant that found it's way into the house. I took it away from him but he ate half of it.
I imagine that they eat them in the wild. I know mine eat crickets and grasshoppers. I think that you may need to watch for the ants biting the gerbils.

probably depends on the species most in the UK for instance are pretty harmless other than the 'red' ant I'd be more concerned that any food from the wild could feasibly bring disease (in this case soil bacteria) into your tanks And yes gerbils are opportunist feeders so I imagine ants would be a tasty snack to them!!

this reminds me of something that happened that creased me up a while ago. I had Shep and Maddie in the playpen and innocently a big fat juicy black ant minding his own business wanders in right passed Shep.. Well shep turn round and chased it round the pen to then proceed to eat it! .. ;D It was so funny and he seems none the worse for his unexpected snack.... I have also seen them munching on unexpected spider invaders in there tanks... could be why i never see a spider in our house.. The thing is you cannot control what oppitune snack may wander into there tanks when your not looking, especially at night. I think gerbils like most rodents are born opitunists and will eat most insects. Andrea

I wish mine would eat some of the spiders in this house! I think the spiders are clever enough to stay far away from the cage.
