Hi!
I used the food method to try to tame my new babies, not they were unfriendly...but... I used uncooked oatmeal and they just loved it, they would come running up looking for it. I did that just 3 or 4 times now, but I have stopped because when I didn't have it, they would try to nibble at my hand. So whenever I would stick my hand in, they would follow it around looking for the oats... cute little things, I just love em!

I did the same thing and still do. They nibbled ("tasted") a little bit at first when my empty hand was in there, but they stopped it pretty quickly. They never did it hard though. They are super friendly now that they are a bit older. They are definitely more friendly, playful and less insecure in the evening (after 8pm) then at any other time of the day.

When I first brought my babies home, one of them lightly bit me, but didn't break the skin or even hurt. Now I know he was just nervous being in different surroundings. Sometimes when my hand is in there I try to leave it in to see if they will go away vs. biting hard. Too afraid to leave it too long. Maybe a little bit more experimenting is to be done with this?.
Thanks for your input!

I love the contact when I feed mine by hand. I use that time to stroke thier fur behind the ears. Some stay and like it and others move a bit or turn to the side and Blackie just runs away.

I'd heard some gerbils liked getting their foreheads rubbed, but none of mine seemed to, they would turn away to, or hop over one step, until this last pair ;D My mottled slate and mottled agouti both like a little forehead rub, I think she learned to enjoy it from him though. Do you think it's a trait they learn from their parents? I wonder if the pups will enjoy it to...

I bet the pups would love it if you do it daily and it's great to tame them.

My gerbils come up on my hand and I pick them up. Then I give them treats (sunflower seeds, cherios...etc) and they eat it on my hand. I love that feeling!
