I'd like to know what should I give to my gerbils so that they have a good diet.
I am feeding my gerbils with a Witte Mollen hamster mix and it has few sunflower seeds. They don't eat the dark pellets and some other little seeds.
Is it ok to mix hamster food with rat food so they get more protein?
I have tried some cat food but they don't like it.

Hello,
Many times I mix foods. Becareful to read the ingredients. Some foods are poisonous. I often mix hamster/gerbil food with parrot food, other bird seeds, and sometimes rat/mice food.
There are threads in the food section that have recipies if you want to mix your own.

Don't worry about the pellets -- I've never heard of a gerbil yet who will eat those stupid pellets (compressed alfalfa, i think). I don't know why every single brand of gerbil/hamster food seems to include them.

Oh yeah, about the rat food. I know some people on the forum have had luck with Reggie Rat brand. I've tried the rat lab blocks just to give them something hard to chew on, plus the extra protein. They don't seem crazy about them though. I think most hamster/gerbil food has adequate protein unless you are breeding them. Is this right everyone?

Thanks for the advice.
Here in Portugal I can only find a few brands (Versele-Laga, Vitakraft and Witte Molen). Does anyone here knows those?
About dog biscuits are there any that can harm gerbils?

I try to choose brands that don't use too much sunflower seeds.
Here in Portugal I think we don't have that brand named vitalin.

One of my gerbs eat those pellet things. Do you think that' s why he's so big?
