Is corn good for them (as in how sunflower seeds are fatty) because randomly, they took an extreme liking to it (the rock-hard pieces that come in the food) and it seems as if it is all that they eat.

As far as I know it's nutritional value is poor, its mainly sugar and starch inside. If they eat it to exclusion of the other food their diet is unbalanced. I would consider 1) removing soem corn so they eat other foods, 2) reducing their feed. If they have enough to be picky about what theyre eating your feedign too much. I now weigh my food out and the wastage has been greatly reduced + my gerbils are eating a more balalnced diet as they do not have the option of being fussy eaters.

In my experience, they will eat one item for a while then change to a different item. It almost seems like they have had thier fill of thier special treats and then change to a new favorite.
I think that overall, they balance thier own diet. It is impossible to monitor every thing that goes in to thier mouth but as long as they are healthy and not putting on the pounds, it is okay.

agreed avoidign overfeeding also helpes encourage balance If theirs a lot of uneaten food reduce the amount and/or give an occasional no feeding day (but not pups or nursing mums)
