I mix my own food too. It has extras for my breeding gerbils, such as rice (high in b vitamins) and dry chick peas (high in protein).

I'd like to find Kaytee near my stores, I use Encore. It has a little less fat then gerbils require, and a little less protein, but they do well with it.
I'm looking into mixing my own food in the future, it's getting ridiculace to buy new bags every week. Plus I could cater to individual needs, the pregnant mothers/nursing, older gerbils, young pups, etc.
Here's a few foods I was looking into, but I'd have to check the amount of everything to get it balanced correctly.
Mix for gerbils dried foods- Commercially prepared food, LM premium vita-vittles, wheat germ, cracked corn, rolled oats, doggie biscuits, millet (not sprayed), corn flakes, cheerios, bran and wheat flakes, lentils carrots, beets, broccolli, spinach, apple, celery, corn flakes, wheat flakes, rasins, barley flakes, oat kernals, oat groats, wheat bran, coarse soyabean meal, wheat crunchies, Whole Oats, Rolled Oats, split Peas, banana chips, puffed wheat, corn flakes, wild bird seed, safflower seeds, wheat, spray millet, whole corn, red wheat and two types of millet, milo, soy nuts, wheat kernals, and split peas, rabbit pellets, cornflower, Soya bean meal,
Fresh Food- apple chunks, chicory, cauliflower, paprika, carrots, endive, cucumbers, raw or cooked potato, pear, banana, mandarin, grapes, Rasberry, coconut, papaya, banana, rose hips, almonds, Frozen foods- blueberry, peas, cantelope
To add to the Breeders mix- mealworms(probably not), almonds, walnuts, peanuts, scrambled eggs, dry dog or cat food, teasthingy yoghurt or quark. boiled egg, vitamin/ mineral powder, mineral block, alfalfa cubes
To add to the Pups diet- Linseed- Makes coats shiny, finch seed (premium) oatmeal flakes (good weaning food)
Treats- sunflower seeds, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, raisin, popcorn, dried corn on the cob, doggie cookie, walnuts, dried fruit, pine nuts, acorns, cucumber seeds, granola, Pine Cones, Cheese, Applesauce, Cranberry juice, Broccoli, grapes, clover, cucumber, Dog Cookie, Dried corn on the cob, honey bars

Tell me more please Piff The Gerbil. Kaytee Exact is a food that has no sunflower seeds or any otehr seeds, it is only little pelleted things that are different shapes and colors and I mix it with kaytee forti-diet to get the seeds and other good stuff

Does anyone have a recipe(sp?) I'd like to mix my own food too! It sounds like fun, and I like fun! Is it really that much cheaper?

WAY cheaper. I start with an empty ice cream pail.
Put in: 3 or 4 cups of rodent alfalfa pellets
3 or 4 cups regular bird seed (buy by the bag)
3 or 4 cups wild bird seed mix (omit if you want the low fat diet) which has loads of nuts and 2 kinds of sunflower seeds
1 cup cat food
1 cup rice
1/2 cup chick peas
1 cup oatmeal (great for weaning pups)
optional additions: almonds, dried veggies, raisins etc., dried milk if to nursing moms

3 questions Sandy-
Instant Rice ok, or should it be the regular kind? And same with the oatmeal. ALso, you mean dry milk like you mix up, and it's kind of chuncky, or do you mean formula?

I heard it wasn's safe to feed gerbils rice because it expands in their stomach causing blockage But I like your mix idea, do you know around what percent of fat and protein it contains? -Nick

I think thatis a myth. All grains gerbil eat are well chewed, and all grains swell up in the digestive tract to some extent as they absorb water. It doesn't cause any problem, I know from experience.
I use dry skim milk, usually I just add it to the top of the feed with a small scoop for my lactating females.
I use whatever kind of rice I have handy, which is generally either Japanese rice or Basmati, and I use quick oats.

I feed my 2 gerbils the Mazuri fortified pellets as their main staple and Nutriphase Gold hamster/gerbil mix as a treat every few days.
Of course they love pieces of apple, carrot, the one loves yogurt, and all kinds of goodies. Bread is a real favorite too!

Thank you Sandy, do you know if their is some other food that would serve as a good subsitute for the rice? I really would like to try your mix idea, around how much protein and fat do you think it has?
