My mix is made up for my breeding gerbils and my growing pups. If you have mature gerbils prone to gaining weight, omit the sunflower seeds and nuts and give them as hand treats instead. You could also increase the alfalfa content. I sometimes feed my overweight guys the rodent blocks alone if they need to reduce.
I'm not sure how much protein and fat there is but the mix is comparable to the premium gerbil mixes I see in the stores.
Oh, also, instead of rice sometimes I use rice krispies especially if it is being used for weaning pups. Rice is high in b vitamins, I'm not sure what else is as high. I add it to prevent spinal and tail deformities in pups (via the pregnant females). Google it?

I also mix my food. The original mix I was using was: whole parts of: wheat, whole oats, rolled oats, bran cereal, barley, white millet, red millet, split peas, whole corn
half parts of: sunflower seeds, peanuts (unsalted, unshelled), raisins, plain cheerios, wheat cereal, corn cereal, dry cat food
This time I opted for a premixed parrot food and then added stuff. The parrot food contains: wheat, barley, whole oats, corn, sunflower seeds, nuts, fava beans, and some other things
I decided to add: the cereals from last time, split peas, two kinds of millet, raisins and banana chips - I left out the peanuts and catfood

I had an interesting experience.... I have 10 gerbils... my boyfriend has a rat, his sister has a hamster, and their borther has 3 gerbils (from me) so there's a LOT of critters to feed. We mixed the Exact food that Piff was talking about (hey Piff, we got it because you said it was good stuff! My gerbies love it!) Anyway, we used Exact, and about 3 pounds of some generic gerbil/hamster mix, and the tail end of the rat's seed mix (he also gets Rat Forti-diet from Kaytee, but we did not add that) and we also put in some oatmeal (maybe 2 or 3 cups, we finished off the jar of it!) and we also added a handful of cat food, and some bird fruit flavored thing just for the heck of it. They all love the food! We decided that next time we're both going to buy half of the ingredients in large bags, and mix it all our selves, because you know that pet store usually sell 2 pounds more for only like $1 more. They know tha tmost people don't want to deal with a large bag of food for a small animal, so they keep the prices in their favor.... We'll all teach em! ;D

I have my gerbils on a mix of things... Right now they are on a diet of two kinds of lab blocks and Purina cat chow. The reason there are two kinds of lab blocks is because when I bought my first I found a bag of lab blocks mainly for hamster, at lest from the packaging but its what they were giving their gerbils in the store. Later I went and found some lab blocks that were a bit small and darker in color which was made for both hamsters and gerbils, so I offer them a bit of each, something different I guess The cat food is in there because I have a pregnant nursing female. I also give them a small ceramic bowl of a good hamster/gerbil seed mix. I like to mix their food up a bit to give them some options.

I just had my aunt order me a "bulk" bag of gerbil/hamster food since I now have 7 adult boys, 5 adult girls, and a mommy with 4 babies. That makes for a LOT of food eaters! We'll see how good the bulk food is. My aunt owns a feed store, and can order a 20 pound bag, and it'll only cost me about $12. I'm really excited for this because otherwise most feeds around here are upwards of $4, and the $4 ones have lots of bird seed in it, and my gerbils don't eat the tiny seeds, so that makes it a waste! I hope this feed is a good mixture, but I'll be sure to let everyone know!
Hey SANDY: do you mean Rice Krispies, like the cereal?

Our Walmart sells a cereal called Alf's Natural Nutrition Brown Rice Cereal that's Rice Krispies made from brown rice--no sugar or additives--and every gerbil I've ever had loves it. RW

Up to now I've mixed gerri gerbil with porridge oats and other things (dried fruit, whole grains, dried coconut etc depending whats been available). I order Gerri by the sackful. But I discovered a new food that was cheaper than Gerri and a 20kg sack instead of 15kg. It's Countrywide Hamster/Gerbil Mix 20Kg

Well, I use different gerbil mixes:
Supreme - Gerri Gerbil. Prestige Premium - Crispy G Nature. XtraVital Gerbil food. Sluis Banquet Gerbil food.
And sometimes a common rodent mix, where I add some dry cat food. But most of the time I use Gerri Gerbil.
I'll go to different pet shops (depents where I am, and when I buy it), so my gerbils get different mixes. They are not used to one in particular.

my gerbils are thriving on oxbow's regal rat premium rat diet... I had it for my mouse before I got my gerbs, and they like it just fine. I supplement with treats every now and again.

I use Hartz Original Recipe Hamster & Gerbil Food. Why? B/c i'm broke and i can get a 5 pound bag for $2.50 american. It supposed to be complete. Once i get another job(the one i have now is for bill paying only) i'll probably buy them either the Kaytee gourmet or the Hartz gourmet.

Hey, that $12 bag I was talking about turned out to be really good seed mixture. I mixed Kaytee Exact with it. I started a thread. "Nature's Cafe, and Kaytee Exact."
