Good idea or bad?
Plain flavoured of course.
Ingredients: Whole corn, corn oil and salt.

I don't see why they would be bad, in moderation, of course. Fatty, salty things like that shouldn't be a large part of any animal's diet (including humans ! ) I'd say maybe half a frito per week, tops. Hope that helps... -Megan

No- definently don't let your gerbils eat anything that is salted, or sweetened, it's very unhealthy for them.
If you want to give your gerbil a treat, try some of these:
Fresh Food- apple chunks, chicory, cauliflower, paprika, lentils, beets, brocolli, cantelope, blueberrys, carrots, endive, cucumbers, raw or cooked potato, pear, banana, mandarin, grapes, Rasberry, coconut, papaya, banana, rose hips, almonds, safflower seeds, wheat, spray millet, whole corn, red wheat, millet, milo, soy nuts, wheat kernals, split peas, barley
Frozen foods- blueberry, peas,
From Garden- dandelion, clover, grass,
Branches- fruit trees(not cherry), willow, birch, hazel, beech, and maple tree. Leaves ok, dried Hay-Timothy and Alfalfa
Treats- sunflower seeds, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, raisins, popcorn, dried corn on the cob, doggie cookie, walnuts, dried fruit, pine nuts, acorns, cucumber seeds, granola, Pine Cones, applesauce, cheese, mealworms,

I agree with Callimico. Stick with their favorite - Sunflower seeds! But don't give them too many.

What I was saying before is it isn't going to kill them, but yes, I would give my gerbils more healthful treats. Even a little bit of a salted snack like that has a lot of salt in it... something to think about...

I would avoid salted things also, generally the consensus of salted treats for animals is always looked down on. There have been lots of times I wanted to offer my rodents or my lovebird a nice nut but they seemed to always be salted and its not good to feed salted foods. Im also under the impression that salt can cause dehydration.
My gerbils really love Millet and Tofu.
Question about the potatoes, I thought I read someplace that potatoes raw were considered poisonous to rodents?

I read somewhere that alfalfa is bad for smaller rodents. Great for rabbits, but bad for gerbils and hamsters.

My gerbils love tofu too! Actually, all of my mammals...and my fish...love tofu.

It was so funny to me to see a topic about fritos because I have been on a frito kick lately. I'll probably gain 10 pounds the way I've been eating them. The other day I forgot to wash my hands after I'd had some and I put my hand in the tank with a couple sunflower seeds. Lorraine was sitting on my hand with her seed and then grabbed ahold of my thumb and at first was just sniffing and it felt like maybe licking it...then she started gently nibbling. She didn't bite me, just nibbled. I realized that it must have been because of the smell of or the salt from the fritos...haha.
