I have a total of 21 gerbils at the moment (anyone want to adopt some? We're in washington state, close to canada.....) but anyway, that's a lot of little mouthes to feed. My aunt owns a feed store, and told me that Nature's cafe has Hamster/Gerbil food. It came in a 20.b bag, and it was only $12. YAY It's all seeds though, but Nature's Cafe is a really high quality brand. So, I got a bag of Kaytee Exact (that cat food looking stuff) and mixed it in. I think I should add a second bag of the Exact food, but even as it is, it's a really nice mix. Just thought I'd let you know. I got 25lbs of gerbil food and it cost me less than $20

So I just adopted two of your Gerbils and I forgot what kind of food you said to get them. Was this the kind you were talking about??

I mixed Nature's Cafe (which comes in bulk) and Kaytee Exact, but any seeded mix is good with Kaytee exact. My gerbils don't much like the little itty bitty bird seeds in the food. I've also used the brand 8-in-1. It comes in a box, and here at walmart it only costs about $2 or $3, and it's plenty for 2 gerbils for nearly the month.

You sound like me. I am down to 23 now, including the 4 newest pups and it was getting expensive to keep spending $70 month on all the pet food (I have a zoo, literally. I have the gerbils, 2 degus, 3 cats, a bird, and an aquarium full of fish)... so I was getting nervous (and broke) about the situation. I got on the net and started researching what they can feed, read this board, etc... and I've done this.
Bulk Sun Feed (I think is the name?) for $17 - 25 pounds 3lbs of cat food 1/2 box of cheerios 1/4 box of raisins rice 1lb of fruit 'n nut bird seed.
I end up with enough feed for nearly 2 1/2 months and they are happy little bugers!! I keep a bag of pumpkin seeds and I dehydrate different fruits for them as well which I hide in cat toys or toilet paper rolls with toilet paper left on them, or I just hand feed it to them. But it's been a lot better spending $25 (that includes everything up there) for 2 1/2 months than what I was spending which was up there.
I've been adopting out gerbils and for some reason, the demand has died down which has left me with the 23. I'm going to wait until the summer is up and school goes back into session to post the ads again. By then, most of them will be about 5 or 6 months old and healthy as a lark, LOL. Good luck with adopting yours out as well. I have a feeling we'll have better luck once school is back into session and/or this summer is up. Everyone is so busy right now, they may be afraid of neglecting them.
