Oil?

I use vegetable or canola oil to oil my gerbils' wheels when they start to squeak, and every time I oil them, they love to lick the oil off the wheel. I use a Q-tip to apply the oil and if I leave it hanging down where they can reach it, they bite off a piece of the cotton and try to eat it.
Is it OK for them to lick oil off my fingers if I want to give them some? Might that actually be good for them? Thanks in advance.

I know that oil is good when added to dog food for dogs because it helps the shine of their coat and is also good for dogs that are prone to dry flaky skin. I don’t know if there are any really advantage or disadvantages to giving a littler to gerbils, wither way I don’t think it matters, but maybe someone here has different information. I also use vegetable oil to put on my gerbils wheels, they lick at it a bit sometimes. I would think to much offered could cause diarrhea.

what about used car engine oil?? :-D I know - I'm silly at times! Hmmm... not so sure about car engine oil (just kidding! Yeah, engine oil is a petroleum-based product and very toxic!) I don't see any problems with giving them a little veggie oil as a treat when you oil their wheel, but like seeds and nuts, oil has a lot of fat and should be enjoyed in moderation. A little offered on your fingers every now and again shouldn't be a problem. My dogs enjoy licking my fingers after I eat a pile of french fries, but they enjoy the salt as much as the oil! -Megan

Lol, very true "guest" Maybe just give them a small teaspoon with a dribble every now and then if you're making it a treat.

Yeah, I don't let them do it now but I noticed if I leave it within reach, they like it and they go nuts over the oil. ;D
