I'm hoping rice is OK because I gave some to my gerbils and they loved it.

Cooked or uncooked? I'm thinking that cooked rice might have a little too much moisture for them but I'm not sure.

I'm wary of rice b/c i know it can kill birds. That's the reason the tradition of Throwing rice at a wedding changed to throwing birdseed, and now its blowing bubbles(which is whack). Anyhow, the rice causes the birds stomachs to explode or something like that, so I'm wary of feeding it to my gerbils.

Hi Guys. I rcently cooked some wholemeal organic rice for my gerbil Berti, who had lost his bottom teeth due to a tussle he had with his brother and now lives with one of his other siblings. He ate it fine, but was`nt overy crazy about it. My mouse loves cooked rice, but even now when I place a few pieces on the tips of my fingers and offer some to the gerbils, they will take one piece and eat it, then drop the second piece! So I imagine it goes down well as a substitute for gerbils who are ill or have missing or broken teeth. I would`nt feed un-cooked rice to rodents because it swells up apparently? Now I`m not sure about this because if you imagine that rodents chew it before it`s digested, how can it then swell in their stomache? I would imagine it`s unsafe for birds because they just swallow it whole, therefor, allowing it to swell?

I know that Sandy mixes rice into her feed, and she had 60 gerbils last time I was there.
As far as cooked rice.... only Keebler seems to like it, and my mottled black girl (with no name). Nobody else was interested in it. And honestly, I'm not sure if they eat the uncooked rice. Its' hard to tell because in all but 1 cage, the food just goes into the bedding, and in the one dish I use, there's lots of little bird seeds in the mix. I'd have to pay closer attention next time.

yes, none of my gerbils die from rice, and I find it helps prevent spinal deformities in the pups because it is one source rich in folic acid. No one's stomach has exploded! However, I don't feed them huge quantities, I mix 1/2 cup into 6 cups of other types of food.

Birds won't explode when eating rice. They've actually tested it. Here's a site that talks about the origins of that, and actually brings up a pretty good point about no birds dying in Asia where rice is a naturally grown crop. www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/r/riceatweddings.htmI don't think instant rice makes much of a difference either. I think cooked rice is something my gerbils might enjoy, so I will be giving that a shot. I'm always on the lookout for new things that they might like.
