i was just away on holiday for 4 days. when i got back, i found that one of my bags of gerbil food had a hole nibbled in it. only a couple pieces of food were scattered around, and it didn't look like much had been eaten, but i was worried about diseases the mice might have. so i took out the all the food about an inch away from the hole, and threw it out. i then moved the food to a different bag. i think i have taken care of the problem, but im not sure. is there some special way to treat the food to make sure there are no diseases? should i worry about the other three bags of food i had in the same cuboard, even though none of them have easily visible holes?
thanks

I keep my gerbil food in either a glass jar, or I also have a plastic one, that is HUGE. It was one that bulk animal crackers came in. My gerbils are currently in the garage (it's cool out there for them) and I've yet to have a mouse problem. How bug are these bags that you have? Tin boxes (like from cookies, or that holiday popcorn) also work really well!

the food i buy comes in in 2.5 pound bags (1.13 kg). but i like your idea of glass jars... i might not be able to find a jar big enough, so i might just get a large "rubbermaid" tub. i dont think mice will be able to get into that.
do you think i need to treat my gerbil food for disese? i have heard alot about mice carring diseses, so im a bit scared to give the food to my gerbils without knowing what will happen...
any input would be helpful. thanks

Not sure about diseses, but you should call a vet and ask! Also, I'm sorry, but forget the rubber made tub! Well... is this IN your house? I know that we had a rubbermade tub for rabbit food, and it got infested with earwigs (it was outside though) and we also have one for duck food, and mice chewed a hole in it, and she had babies in there! If it's IN your house, then I wouldn't worry too much about the tubs, they should be fine unless you have a serious rodent problem.

I would probably toss the bag to be honest. Wild mice can carry Tyzzers and other diseases. Yes do store your food in a mouse-proof container. It should also be insect proof!! You can also freeze it, always a useful precaution,

the rubber maid tub is in the house, but it is still in the mice infested cuboard. but i will move it out straight away. if i can find jars big enough, i will put my food in those. but i might not be able to find any, so does any one have any other ideas for a mouse proof container?
i will probably chuck the bag of food that the mice got into. i moved the food into a new bag, after removing the corner that was chewed, as well as the food around that corner, but i would rather not take any risks.
is it worth it doing something about the other bags? they have no visible holes, but they were right next to the bag that got chewed, in the same cuboard.
thanks for your help
